What is a Learning Community?

  • A small cohort of up to 24 students who navigate their first year in college together
  • An opportunity to connect meaningfully with professors at an early stage
  • A chance to learn more about UCR’s resources
  • A chance to make friends, form study groups, and participate in campus activities
  • An opportunity to explore potential career opportunities

A CNAS Scholar Learning Community Student:

  • Receives reserved seating in select core courses
  • Is engaged directly with faculty and academic advisors
  • Receives Supplemental Instruction
  • May participate in research as a first-year student
  • Is more likely to stay on track and graduate on time
  • Makes the most out of their first year at UCR!


  • Students who participate in the CNAS Scholars Learning Community program get a good, solid foundation in science and mathematics courses needed for success in upper division course work in the college.

  • The students who complete this program will acquire better study skills which can be applied to all subjects.

  • Upon completion of the program, students have the opportunity to apply for a paid summer research position with a faculty member in CNAS.

  • Participants in the program may become peer mentors at the Learning Center and may have the opportunity to become future workshop leaders for CNAS Scholars.
