Research Expectations
Research is a Way of Life!
If you are interested in becoming a CNAS FSLC Summer Scholar, please be aware of the following expectations from an accepted Scholar:
- Time Commitment: the summer internship is considered a full time job during its duration. This means that you are expected to work 40 hours/week for 10 weeks. The exact schedule can be worked out with your faculty mentor. If you are intending to take summer classes, it will not be possible to do both. Students will not be allowed to work during this time.
- Once per week you will have lunch with Dean Richard Cardullo. This is an informal lunch (brown bag lunch) where you will discuss your research in a group setting. This may require you to present what you are working to the other students. (Don’t worry – it’s really laid back and most students enjoy telling each other what they’re working on).
- At the end of the internship you will be required to write a short report on your results obtained from the summer (you will not receive the final paycheck without fulfilling this requirement). You may have the opportunity to present your research either at a campus sponsored research conference or at the Southern California Conference on Undergraduate Research (or both). What a wonderful opportunity!!! (You get to put it on your resume!)
- If, at any time during the internship, you fail to meet the above listed expectations, you may be asked to withdraw from participating in the summer internship.
- You will also sign a contract for the summer internship, which lists all the expectations, that signifies that you understand what is expected of you.
